Tips for growing grass from seed or sod in Nova Scotia

Introduction

Some say grass will grow on anything, and "they" wouldn't be completely wrong.  But, who are "they" and what do "they" know?  If you want the best looking grass that your neighbors will envy there are a few things we need to consider.


Start with Soil

To get the best results first we need a good base consisting of a loamy soil that allows good drainage with the proper PH.  We recommend at least a 6 inch base of Premium Organic Lawn Soil.

Can I use less than 6 inches?

In some cases you can get away with less and in some cases you may require more.  It all boils down to the existing soil conditions known as the in-situ soil.  If you have a good soil base consisting of some organics, clay, silt and sand you can likely get away with less, conditions like this can be found in areas of Sackville, Hammonds Plains, and Fall River.  If however you have a rocky sub base such as in West Bedford or Timberlea where bedrock is predominant you may require more than 6 inches.

Seed or Sod

With grass seed or sod the formula is the same, the difference comes down to how much work do you want to put in and how long are you willing to wait for results?  Water, sunshine and a bit of care will have you reaping the rewards of a beautiful green turf.

Best time to plant Seed or Sod

Without a doubt planting seed or sod in the spring or fall will yield the best results in Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and Surrounding Area.  There are several reasons for this:

  • Rain is more common in spring and fall which means less watering for you
  • The sunshine is not as hot or direct during these months which will prevent your sod or seed from drying out or burning

Why planting in the summer may not be the best idea?

  • When the sun is high and hot such as June, July and August it may be required to water multiple times per day or cover with hay, straw or some sort of fabric to hold the moisture and prevent burning/drying.
